Oceania Dairy are a large dairy exporter based in the prime dairying region of South Canterbury/North Otago. Their state-of-the-art plant at Glenavy is home to a 10 tonne an hour milk powder dryer. At full capacity, the entire plant will be capable of processing 300 million litres of milk per year, generating 47,000 tonnes of milk powder.
We enjoy a longstanding working relationship with Oceania, having successfully completed an office and lab project for them in the past. This trust paved the way to partner with them once again on a hugely ambitious project - the design and build of a drystore with a 3,600 tonne capacity and adjoining blending and canning facility.
The 26,000m2 drystore was part of Stage 2 of a massive expansion to bring the milk processing facility up to its intended production targets. As an expansion project, careful attention was given to scheduling and the overall impact construction could have to ongoing operations.
A large facility, the concrete floor called for six individual post-tensioned concrete slabs covering an impressive 26,775 square metre area. These were poured in succession over a very tight time fame. Concrete supply came directly from an on-site mixing facility.
Flanking this 300 metre long structure was the parallel project of a blending and canning facility that requires the highest standards of hygiene for its infant milk powder product line.
We’re no stranger to large scale projects such as these, especially when there’s no time to stop working. The Oceania build is a great example of the coming together or our unique specialist capabilities in drystore construction and a lot of experience in scheduling construction in such a way that allows little to no downtime to current production.
The result is an impressive facility that has met our client’s requirements, deadlines and budget.
