Dairy giant Fonterra, as part of its expansion of operations at its milk processing centre at Pahiatua, decided on building an additional drystore facility in order to increase the dairy export quota of this North Island complex.
We enjoy a longstanding relationship with Fonterra and offered a design and build solution to meet their requirements - similar in scope to other large scale projects done in the past. The project itself needed to conform to an unusual construction site footprint.
Our design and build solution maximised the use of available space and incorporated an Environmental Load Area (ELA), which can accommodate direct loading to trains. This system incorporated a lowered dock which forklifts can be driven onto, and from which products can be directly loaded into containers ready for shipment by rail.
One particular design requirement of this project was the specification for a 184 metre long in-situ concrete retaining wall to conform to the unusual topography of the construction site.
